Fake rock

Loyal reader and number one contributor Kimmie C. sends this in from the Catskill mountains, where real large rocks abound. This fake one in front of a stone wall creates a rich narrative of life in this modern world. A $2,000 U.S. savings bond goes out to Kimmie to thank her for sending in this real pic with snazzy writing.

The Curatorial Committee weighs in

After what seemed like a marathon meeting of the curatorial committee (thank god for the mojitos), our curatorial focus was formalized. Free stuff signs. Hugs are not stuff. They are not junk. They are wonderful gestures in interpersonal relations. Anybody remember Leo Buscaglia? The hug doctor? We're posting this sign, snapped on the streets of Woodstock by reader/activist Donna F., but will not be posting any others. So don't even try sending in your photos of people offering free back rubs, free foot massages, free kisses and other sundry free gestures. We won't post 'em. It's against our curatorial focus and now we know it. So there. A 6 of Bud Longnecks to Donna in appreciation.

How to win points with the missus.

A banner day for free

Yesterday we went to a yard sale up a long driveway near our house. A driveway we'd never even noticed before. The free boxes started down toward the bottom and continued right up to the top, where a little converted auto shop was home to two older people, I forget their names, who were, as you might guess from all the stuff they were giving away for free, very sweet. One of the free signs even used some rarely seen lower case "e"s, bringing to mind ee cummings, which you probably know stands for Edward Estlin. Doesn't "a box of free" just sound like something he might have written?

That's my missus heading up and holding hands with our boy. She's the apple of my eye 95 days out of 100 and so this poem by ee cummings, "i like my body when it is with your body":

i like my body when it is with your
body. It is so quite new a thing.
Muscles better and nerves more.
i like your body. i like what it does,
i like its hows. i like to feel the spine
of your body and its bones, and the trembling
-firm-smooth ness and which i will
again and again and again
kiss, i like kissing this and that of you,
i like, slowly stroking the, shocking fuzz
of your electric fur, and what-is-it comes
over parting flesh . . . . And eyes big love-crumbs,

and possibly i like the thrill

of under me you so quite new

Reader Coll P.F. writes in with a bunch of pissy comments about how the previous post didn't mention the pola effect (by which I assume he means polarizing, but who knows) and how the sign was actually on 212, not out Wittenberg way. Duly noted. Ooops! I guess I got your address wrong, too! I'll just hang on to that case of port myself. Sorry, Coll P.F.D.B.!
Reader Coll P.F. sends in this lovely lovely shot from down Wittenberg way. A case of Quinta do Noval, Nacional, Vintage Port - 1996 is on its way to him as our little way of saying "obrigado!"

"Don't take that picture!"

When you're doing weird stuff like taking pictures of free signs, sometimes it makes people nervous. Today, the guy who owned this sign didn't want me to take a picture of it that showed the house in the background because he was afraid that it would be misconstrued as a sign giving a very nice house away for free. Hmmm.
